Best Tattoo-Friendly Spots

So I’m moving to Japan (in the Gunma prefecture) next week for about a year. And I have a few tattoos. They are well-hidden under my clothes, but one of them on my thigh is pretty big so they might be hard to cover with tapes or otherwise.

I know you can look all that up on the Internet, but Id like to hear about tested-and-approved Redditor experiences. So let’s hear ’em!

Tattoo-friendly ryokan, onsen, konyoku, beach or other awesome places where a fella needs to take clothes off.

  1. I’ve seen tattooed people in beaches. You don’t need to be worried about it.
Some Onsen places don’t allow people with tattoo. Ryokan don’t mind tattooed people but some of them don’t allow them to bathe in their onsen. In this case, you need to bathe in a private onsen.

  2. Pretty much any cheap sento that costs around 500 yen or less will have no problem with tattoos, at least in all the places I’ve been to. Onsens attached to hotels usually have a warning sign.

  3. I’ve been to onsens with tattooed people and seen no issue even at places where signs clearly stated that tattoos weren’t allowed.

I don’t think having a tattoo or not really matters, it might be the type of tattoo and how much. Tattoos associated with organized crime members are going to raise issues.

    Mileage will vary.
