I’m thinking about getting a vacation home in japan.. How should I go about this?

Hello! I’ve always wanted to live in japan but I’ve ended up somewhere else and that dream is fading. But I still want to visit there as long as possible as much as I can a year.

I want a okay sized apartment for sale on the outskirts of Tokyo. Is it possible to find an apartment for $50k – $200k USD? Also, I don’t think I can have dual citizenship in japan, So I will most likely be getting it as a non-resident.

Also, how long can I visit japan a year?

To be honest, It’s not a great investment. But this is very emotional to me as I’ve always felt like I have an attachment to Japan. I love the culture, I love the food, I love many things about japan. I know japan had it’s faults, but I feel like I’d be a lot happier there than anywhere else. And it always felt like my true home.

I want to be able to decorate my apartment there (And also clean from earthquakes). I want it to look nice like my own house!

How would I go about this? How many and what bills would I need to pay monthly? Other things that I should consider?

  2. Tourist visa is 90 days limit with a hard limit of 180 days per rolling year.

Generally speaking however, they will start asking questions if you end up coming back for another 90 days, such as how you are sustaining yourself in the country with no income (You can’t work on a Tourist visa).

So if your bank account is bursting and you can demonstrably prove it, you will be fine.

Keep in mind that you will also need to invest into a Management Company that will help you manage the property for the 180-270 days that you will not be in the country and that alone can cost a decent bit.

For the bills, you can expect the same bills that anyone else might, gas, water, electricity for both when you’re there and not there, taxes and so on.

  3. It’s virtually impossible to buy a home or get a mortgage as a visitor. You need to plan on getting permanent residency first to buy a home.
