  1. But local distributor Toho-Towa has yet to set an opening date for the film and a June 29 article in the Variety movie trade publication speculated that, given Japanese sensitivities toward its subject matter, “Oppenheimer” might not get a Japanese release period.

  2. Well, I have not seen it, but it seems very unlikely, in my experience of Hollywood and America and Americans, that this film is calling the mass murder of innocent civilians what it actually was…. a war crime for which Truman, LeMay and others should have swung for…..firebombings too.

The Japanese have gotten rather soft about the American goon squad and them bring nukes over here, so I actually want this film shown right now, in the running up to the anniversaries of the slaughter of their children. Japan needs to both admit its own crimes and call out those of others. Its an odd position, but only Japan suffered this specific crime.

  3. I’m sympathetic to the timing, but this is a part of history that not many Japanese know about and from what I’ve heard, tried to be factual about the life of a very troubled and misunderstood man.

Before the buzz of the movie I’m sure most Japanese had never even heard of him.

Not many films are banned these days, and I don’t think japan would ban the film as that sends its own message. It just might not get a release. I haven’t looked forward to a movie like this for a long time, and not being able to see it in Imax as it was planned and designed to be shown will be sad.

  4. Films are released much later here in Japan anyway.
For example, John Wick 4 comes out in September, six months after the states.

  5. A paid streaming release for Japan probably makes more sense than a theatrical run.

  6. I’ve said it and I’ll say it again. Back in 2001, Pearl Harbor was released in May in the US and in July in Japan. Nobody said jack shit. Stop making up scenario that doesn’t exist.
