Is gasoline more expensive in the morning?

I went to a Eneos gas station this morning and I was surprised to see that high octane gas was 194¥/L, when it’s usually around 170¥. Are prices adjusted during the day? Maybe more expensive during busy times?

  1. Prices evolve, but not according to busy/calm hours.

The Eneos station near me has a line account, and they update when the price will increase and why, as well as send codes for discounts.

  2. Maybe you misread the difference between regular and high octane, the average of the regular one is 172
and the high octane is 183.

    But,still 194 is in fact expensive….

  3. The government fuel subsidy is gradually being taken away. The subsidy is being reduced by a certain percent every few weeks and I believe July 31st was one of the dates that the subsidy was reduced. October is when it will be taken away entirely.

  4. Someone posted a great site about 10 years ago that was people self reporting gas prices. Made deciding where to fill up super easy.

Sadly it was lost in a hard drive cerfluffle.

  5. Somewhat related: someone told me a long time ago that, since gas expands as it gets warmer, if you fill up at night when it is cooler you can get a better deal on the gas due to how the gas meter works. Is there any veracity to this?

  6. Another thing to keep in mind, is that gasoline prices are “suggested” by a group that most major brands are a part of. Think UN for Japanese gas prices. They set the general price and gas stations that don’t follow it can get audited.

That’s why you see a lot of places that advertise prices as 170円 but in reality at the pump its like 140.

In my prefecture the prices are like 154 for normal gasoline but at the pump its 130.
