Is there share house like in japan in europe?

Hello,

I lived for 2 years in a share house in Tokyo, and I really loved it. It’s very cheap, and it’s perfect for meeting people from around the world. I really loved this kind of lifestyle.

Right now, I’m considering living in England or Ireland, and I was looking for some share houses, but there’s nothing like the ones I was able to find in Tokyo. What I found was more like sharing a house with 3 or 4 people, but what I’m looking for is more a place where we share everything except our little private rooms to sleep in, with at least 30 or 40 people if not more (mine were more like 70+ people).

Maybe there is a share house like I’m looking for, but with another term? Do you know if such a place exists in England or Ireland? Is there any other place in Europe where such a place exists? Have you experienced this kind of share house in other places except Japan? (any country in the world besides Japan). Thank you!

  1. Hi, could you suggest me some japanese (Tokyo and/or more) shared house? I am thinking about to do this kind of experience.

    Thank you!

  2. In the U.K. this is basically how a lot of regular rentals work, people share apartments / houses with strangers to save costs. You would share the kitchen and bathroom and have your own room. Whether or not the group are clean, quiet etc is just down to luck and a bit of judgement when you first meet them.

  3. I’m in Ireland, I think we call this concept ‘co-living’.
but it’s not really common, or affordable. It sounds like what you are describing is like student accommodation.
If you are coming to study there might be private student accommodation buildings available to you.
We have co-living buildings in cities, but they are very fashionable, rare, and expensive. They are seen as sort of a luxury for mainly wealthy people who work a lot, but would live alone and have faculties like cinema rooms.

House sharing is very common, and is more normal.
People would share a regular house or apartment. Ideally everyone has their own bedroom. But some places, to make it even cheaper, will use bunk beds and many people might share a room.

  4. Outside of some Halls of Residence and the Oxbridge/Durham colleges can’t think of anything that comes close to 10+ people arrangements that are a) Legal or b) Pleasant. There are (non cult) communes here and there – the BBC did a profile of one recently but not exactly common at all.
