Psychotherapy – Exploring options

I’m looking for a psychotherapist to work with.
With my last therapist the cost was ¥12,000 for 50 minutes (via zoom), once a month. It would ideally be lower.

To those who have seen therapists before, how much was it and what was your experience?

Remote would be preferred but I live in Tokyo.

  1. 12k per week? You need to be rich for that. My country therapists costs like 4-5k and I still can’t afford it constantly

  2. I’ve never really seen a therapist here with rates lower than ¥10,000/hour. Your current therapist seems to be at about market price. You can sometimes get a better deal if you go through an American telehealth service like Betterhelp or Talkspace. Those charge a flat rate per month, so you want to be seeing your therapist weekly to get your money’s worth. You also will be charged a lower rate if you pay quarterly or annually rather than monthly or weekly. How good of a deal it ends up being depends on what payment schedule you choose

  3. I’d recommend find a therapist outside of Japan (UK, Canada, Australia if you speak English) that does online meetings. There are a lot more therapists willing to do online meetings since covid. Payment can be pretty easy too, lots of options like PayPal, Wise, etc.
I’ve tried Betterhelp and honestly the quality of therapy on there is very hit or miss, with far more misses.
