What would be the best lodging option for a couple on Working Holiday Visa?

We are planning to move to Japan for a year with my boyfriend, and I was looking into the different lodging options.

I know sharehouses are popular, but for 2 people they seem to be too expensive and uncomfortable, since most rooms are made for 1 person (the bed is also for 1 person).

I also looked into renting an apartment, and 2DK or 1LDK apartments seem to be more worth it for 2 people (smaller would be fine as well, but I read that they don’t usually let 2 people rent such a small apartment). They have much more space that is all ours, but obviously we would have to buy furniture and everything which is extra money.

In your opinion, which would be better for us? Are there other options for a 1 year stay for a couple?

  2. Two people living in a 1LDK is totally fine and even normal. 1K would probably get resistance but 1LDK is twice as big or even more.

The bigger problem is contracts and move in costs. Normally rental contracts are for two years and can cost 3-4 months rent up front (key money+realtor money+deposit).

That’s why share houses are recommended, short term is okay.

As an alternative, Airbnb would work.

Many sharehouses also don’t allow multiple-occupancy in their single rooms.
