Anyone taken the Shinkansen back and forth on one ticket?

Hi I’ll be making my way from Tokyo to Atami via Shinkansen on what happens to be a possible date of Dr Yellow running.

I was wondering if I could buy a ticket from Tokyo to Atami, but disembark at say Yokohama, then go back to Tokyo Station, then go to Atami all while not leaving any of the stations and travelling on the same Tokyo-Atami ticket?

Is this sort of back and forth allowed?

I’ll be using non-reserved seating.

**Edit: Seems like the consensus is no );**

**Side note:** I saw online that if you do actually need to backtrack because you fell asleep or smth, you can ask the station office staff or conductor to for a 誤乗 stamp on your ticket. This is assuming that it’s maybe 1-2 stops on a Kodama probably. I don’t think they’d be too happy to stamp something like a Hakata to Nagoya backtrack :/

  1. No, this is not allowed. Your entry ticket will know how long you were in the station for and that you’re trying to exit the station you entered from (immediate red flag). This will flag station attendants and they’ll usually try to figure out where you went and make you pay for all legs of your trip.

If they can’t figure out where you went sometimes they’ll try to charge you for the longest distance of the line FYI.

This would take way more time than any reasonable use of a station entry ticket as well. Pay the fare to ride the trains or don’t go.

You can probably ride a little back and forth between Tokyo-Atami if you actually get off at Atami at the end exit, re-enter and purchase a new Atami -> Tokyo ticket. Not sure if the time it took you to Enter Tokyo and exit Atami will cause any red flags.

  2. I know that some train nerds do something similar on regular lines, but I have not heard them doing something similar on Shinkansen lines, so probably it is a big no-no for JR.

UPD. Oh, I read your other less confusing comment, and looks like [it is allowed](https://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q12106519452) to make a stop at the intermediary station without leaving the station and continue your trip after that. Going back to your original station is a big no-no tho.

  3. Why do you go back to Tokyo?

The issue is if you get your ticket checked, and you likely could, on the way back to Tokyo, you don’t have a valid ticket.

  4. You could buy a ticket to the next station but go further down the line and then go back without exiting the station. One time I bought a ticket from Shin Osaka to Shin Kobe but rode the train to Okayama because I really wanted to buy Kibidango lol I bought them at the souvenir store inside Okayama Station and went back to Shin Kobe with no issues.

  5. Just curious where did you find out when it’s running? I’d be interested in seeing it maybe too
