Finding the etymology of words

Hey everyone, I came across the word イエバエ (iebae) for “housefly” and was wondering where the word comes from since it’s in katakana.

I’ve checked this subreddit and /r/japaneseresources for good places to find the etymology of words but I haven’t been lucky.

I’m not quite skilled enough to be able to read the dictionary definition, but I could probably translate it, however it would be nice if somebody knows of a good resource to find word etymologies in Japanese.

Thanks in advance!

  1. Something worth mentioning is that in Japanese, animals are often written in katakana even though they have often have kanji associated with them.

Ex: wolf is 狼, but is often written as オオカミ
