in my home country i know its illegal to copy (some types of) keys. How is it in japan? How do I know if its ok to copy or not? I want to copy a key, but want of course to avoid breaking, or trying to break the law.
It is legal to get a key copied, however some keys cannot legally be copied and you’ll be refused service if you try. A friend lost one of two keys years ago and tried to get the remaining copied and was refused everywhere. He had to contact his landlord to request another. I’m not sure if there is a guide on which are legal or not though sorry, but if your key is a protected type you’ll be refused service.
Take it to a locksmith. They will either copy it, or tell you that you can’t copy it. Either way, you’ll get your answer.
You can only copy the “original” key. You can’t copy from an already copied key, most locksmith would refuse. They’ll know if it’s the original or not from the serial number. I doubt you even have the original key.
You can ask the landlord and they may lend you, or copied one for you. Of course you’ll be paying the cost.

Yes, that’s why you are usually charged for the installation of a new lock when you first move into an apartment. It’s part of the initial fee

If you’re copying a key to your rental home, be sure you don’t lose the original key(s). When you move out, the owner will check whether the key you give back is an original or a copy. If it’s a copy they will charge you a fee because now they have to change the locks, just in case you sneakily tried to keep a key for future access.
I made the silly mistake of giving my spare key to my friend so they can keep it for me in case I get locked out, but of course 6 years later they don’t have the key anymore and I had to pay to get the locks changed when I moved out.
If it’s a basic key just go to Mister Minit and they can copy it for you
Where I’m from you can get a new car key just from license plate alone… This has been an amusing read
