It was legal for so long… is it now seen as a bad thing since shrooms were made illegal out here? Is it illegal to pick them if you see one growing in the wild?
Totally not ok. Ppl’ll freak out if you tell them, show it, or just even talk about it unless they’re also using it. You can also get into a big trouble. Just don’t tell anyone.
Why did you post this twice?
The mycelium is still legal and easy to acquire. Some versions such as the famous Mario mushroom are still sold as regional delicacies (fly agaric). So for the people predisposed to those substances they’re still readily available. And intelligently they’ve kept their mouths shut so the government doesn’t feel the need to step in and stop it.
The first rule of magic mushroom club is save Princess Peach before you shrink to normal size.
The second rule of magic mushroom club is you don’t talk about magic mushroom club…
I’ve had this conversation with a few Japanese people, the outcome ranged from “I want to try one day but it’s so illegal here” to “my friends and I go to farms in the countryside and pick them ourselves” (from a big raver, make of that what you will). But of course talking about this with 20-30s people at bars in Shibuya is a very limited subset of the general population…
Like most things considered bad in japan that used to be okay/done.
“Huh? What? It’s always been illegal and bad”

Japanese prison is not a fun time.
> It was legal for so long…
Let’s not confuse “not yet made illegal” with “legal”. Sure, from a “will you get locked up” standpoint the two are pretty much the same but it’s not like Japan (legally and socially) was accepting of magic mushrooms and then in 2002 suddenly wasn’t.
It’s similar to the various THC derivatives that are being sold here, until the laws catch up.
On a similar topic, you can buy the peyote cactus legally. They sell them on Rakutan.
Japanese psilocybes are one of my areas of expertise. Collecting spores it totally fine. As long as everything is labeled clearly as “for microscopy use” nobody will say anything to you. I brought my entire spore library with me from the USA so that as I find new specimens I can compare spores/ germinate them and use the mycelium for dna sequencing.
On a side note, if you do find any of the local Japanese species in the wild, please let me know as I would love to help document/ sequence them. They are very understudied and I’ve made it my mission to sequence as many as I can. 🤘🫡
Respect the local law and dun challenge it if u want to stay longer.
Most people wouldn’t spend much time thinking about such topics, and probably would think you’re a bit strange for asking such questions.
