Permanent Residence on a 1 year engineering visa with 80+ HSP points

Hi, everyone! I am planning to apply for a Permanent Residence but I am on a 1 year engineering visa currently. I have been Japan for almost 7 year and eligible for 80 HSP points for last 1 year (70+ for last 3 years) so I am planning to apply for PR through HSP route. But is 1 year engineering visa going to be a blocker? Anyone in the similar situation as me got their PR accepted?

    Yup. You can’t apply.

You should maybe switch onto HSP(i) visa if your employer can support it, and then you will get a guaranteed 5 year.

  2. If you’ve had the HSP requirements for that long there’s no need to have held the HSP beforehand, you can apply straight for PR.

I just got PR with 75 points after holding the HSP visa for one year (had the points for 3) and it clearly states that you can apply based on having the points. It’s not dependent on your current visa.

Edit: to clarify, if you have a valid visa and you think you now qualify for PR through HSP route, you apply for a change of visa to PR and include the HSP points proof in your application too.

  3. As others have pointed out, you need to have a three or five year status of residence (SOR) in order to apply.

You would either need to renew your work SOR and get three or five years, or get the HSP five year SOR before your apply for PR.
