Getting a moped license in Japan as a foreigner?

Hi everyone,

I’m moving to Japan next month on a student visa and I’d like to get a moped license while I’m there. I’ve researched that the test can be taken in English (I don’t know Japanese much because just started to learn recently) but had a few questions for those who have gone through the process:

* What’s the process like for getting a moped license as a foreigner in Japan? Do I need to take classes or can I just show up for the test?
* How difficult is the test if I take it in English? I’m curious if there is any specific book or learning material to follow along?

Thanks so much for any insights you can provide!

  2. Do you have a motorcycle license in your country, and will you have you had it for at least 90 days before you come to Japan?

If so, you should be able to apply to convert it to a Japanese license. Depending on which country you’re coming from you may also be able to skip the driving test.

If not, then you’ll need to start from scratch, the same as a local would. Which means you’d need to take lessons.
