What is the fuzzy ball that men sometimes wear with their yukatas?

Sorry if yukata isn’t the correct word. I’m referring to the traditional robes worn by men. In some manga I’ve read, I’ve seen them wearing these fuzzy looking balls that seem to hang around the stomach area, but I can’t seem to find much online about what function they serve. Are they just decoration?

  1. I think you’re talking about the haori jacket that is worn over the kimono. These are often tied together using *haori himo*. The pompom, or the fuzzy balls, are actually the frayed ends of these himo.

Not sure how it came to be like that, but it is often seen in weddings.
