Warning: ignore internet companies telling you that you need “internet maintenance”

These guys are becoming more frequent and more aggressive in my area recently. Basically they make it sound like your housing company/landlord requested your internet/phone lines need to be “checked”. They mainly target people in apartments/condos.

They will be from big companies like AU, J-COM etc, but make no mistake these guys are SALESMEN and are working on commission. Their main and only task is to make you sign up for net/phone/TV, preferably all 3 in one combined bill. If you let them in they will plug something into the aerial socket and tell you your internet is “slow”, or your TV signal is “weak”. This is lies and just a setup for the main con.

Tell them to go away, no you do not need anything checked, no you don’t want to “make an appointment for next week”, if you don’t categorically say “NO” they will keep coming back again and again.

Tell your friends, spread the word, and have a good night!

  1. gasp, door to door salesmen? tell me more opps someone with an id from an “NHK” is at the door I’ll be right there as soon as the nice man tells me how much I can save by switching to his utility company

  2. Had some guy dressed more like an engineer than a sales droid knock on our door (house, not apartment) a while back with some story about upcoming internet maintenance and reduced internet speeds, I can’t recall the exact spiel but it made no sense and it was clear he was trying to sell something, so I bid him on his way.

  3. I have had the same with Osaka Gas – there is a legitimate check that needs to be done every x number of years by them but a local branch was coming around (multiple times if you weren’t home) pushing another kind of check that’s basically a sales call. My Japanese is decent but I initially made an appointment because a) i’m always tired and not always thinking clearly and b) it is confusing given there is a real check they are mandated to do. Once I figured it out I cancelled.
