Electrician license 電気工事士

Hey guys,

Has anyone ever took the test to get their electrician license 電気工事士2種?

I’m thinking of getting it to renovate my house. The test is all in Japanese but did you have any difficulty with the written or practical exam?

  1. As for the written test, I’m not quite sure about the required japanese proficiency but my JLPT N3 passer friends were able to pass the exam. Many study for the exams using the textbooks found in bookstores or on online shopping sites.

As for the practical test, they publish the general test questions (I think they publish 12 or 13 problems) and pick they one from that list. There are lots of youtube tutorials on how to tackle those problems. If you aren’t used to doing electrical works, practice is needed to be able to complete the test under the given time limit. There isn’t a lot of required japanese reading during the practical, though be careful about the type of connectors to be used on which junctions, as it is written in japanese.

You may check the past test questions at their website: https://www.shiken.or.jp/answer/index_list.php?exam_type=50.

  2. Did it last year, practical was on xmas day so about 8montjs ago.

It’s all in japanese, but if you study the books it’s not that hard to pass. The pass rate is 60% so it’s alright.

There are a few questions on power calculations, and some tricky one regarding which device to use, but overall nothing out of the ordinary. Study the book and you’ll pass.

For practical exam, I failed once to a stupid mistake, used wrong color wire to connect 2gang outlet… then passed perfectly.

Practical is either pass or fail. There are very few kind of mistake that will not be instant fail.

Again, there are only I think 13 different patterns to learn, and you have 40min to do it. Bring your own tools, own watch (no smart anything).

All patterns are available on youtube, with explanations on where it’s easy to fail or make a mistake.

They also sell trial sets on amazon, got one and it actually helped me a lot to get to know more the Japanese tools and devices, and to actually train the different patterns and time myself.

Feel free to ask questions !
