Some of the websites for these companies in Japan are so barren that they look like scams. Who do you use and what sort of middleman fees do they charge? Trying to find one for an employer from the US to hire someone based in Japan. I do not need visa sponsorship.

Deel has been great. I run the Japan business of a U.S. fintech startup and they’ve used Deel while we get the Japan entity up and running. Everything online and it’s been very smooth. They’ve been quick to answer any questions.
I think they’ve only been for a couple of years but I’ve been quite happy with them, including as an employer of my other staff in Japan.
One caveat, IIRC Deel cannot yet sponsor visas in Japan.
Deel is under investigation by both California & Florida at the state level and a new investigation has been launched at the federal level as of last week. This is for shenanigans with misclassification issues of over 1,000 internal employees. Caveat emptor.
Go global is pretty good.
