Foreigner Bars Kyoto?

*not a tourist – just never been to Kyoto before*

Hello! I’m visiting Kyoto 13th-16th and planned to go to some bars and hopefully meet some other foreigners. Have had a Google and cursory explore of this and other subs to find recommendations and so far have what seem to be the common ones (pig&whistle, rock bar ING, hub, bees knees, fishbowl)

If anyone is local/ familiar in Kyoto I’d love to hear your advice or recommendations on bars to meet other foreigners.

Thanks in advance!

  1. If you’re feeling fancy, L’Escamoteur by Kanogawa river near Shijo is a great bar, usually filled with English-speaking tourists. I’m sure it’ll packed during Obon, so you should try at early hours.

  2. For socializing and meeting strangers, if you don’t mind just hanging out with tourists, the usual suspects you mentioned are honestly your best bet. Dublin in Nijo is my favorite of the generic irish pub-style ones.

Personally I prefer craft cocktail bars like Finlandia in Gion or K6 aound the Ritz Carlton but they are more intimate bars where it might be hard to start a conversation.

  3. I’m currently in Kyoto and have frequented one bar that’s filled with foreigners. I’m actually at the bar right now. It’s called Beer Bar Miyama 162. One thing to consider is that there’s smoking inside. The walls are littered with money notes from all foreigners who’ve visited.
