Renting cars

Just got my driving license and I’m wondering about the cheapest and easiest service to rent cars in japan.
I’m located in Hokkaido.

Thanks

  1. I’ve only used the major automaker rental companies so I can’t say much about the small ones. Toyota Rentacar I found good and easy to use. The website is like your typical Japanese website but if you get used to it the rest is smooth.

  2. For a short (3-4 hours) rent, a car sharing service will be cheaper than traditional rental agencies.

When borrowing a car for a few days, Rakuten Travel has a page where you can compare prices between different agencies.

  3. You have a license, you live in Hokkaido and you post on reddit. Not much harder than using google.

  4. I used to really like Times car share back then before I had a car. I felt like its much cheaper since you dont need to pay for gas, extra stuff like “navi”, insurance etc.

  5. Depends on where in Hokkaido you are. For Sapporo, I find that nico nico is usually the cheapest, but you’ll get a much older car compared to other car rental companies. Good luck if you are looking to rent during the Obon holidays.
