  1. If you’re a licensed teacher, apply for a proper english teaching job, not JET. Way over qualified just imo

  2. I took some time to mention my training and how it would be beneficial to the job. Being a trained English teacher, I drew parallels to having a strong command of grammar and the English language. That said, I wouldn’t make the WHOLE SOP about this. I gave it maybe 2-3 sentences and focused on both how I’d be an asset and what I want to gain in return plus my love for working with kids. The last part got most of my attention tbh, along with my experiences doing so thus far and little things about what makes me uniquely me. It must have worked because I’ll be heading to Nagasaki in three weeks 🙂

  3. I made a lot of references to how it would benefit me – I’m interested in co-ordinating EAL in the future. Also my wider experiences at school and being part of the community – leading school trips to France, organising and MCing talent shows… that kind of thing! Not so much the lesson planning etc.

  4. I touched a bit on it but I didn’t make my whole SOP about it. I gave the experiences that were absolutely important and left the rest out. Even though it would show I’m qualified I personally think only talking about my certification would make it seem flat. So I also hit other points too. What I want to take away from jet and bring back to my home country. I tried to focus on the things that would set me apart from others. A lot of certified teachers apply but not all get accepted so make sure your SOP is rounded good.

  5. I wrote about teaching students who had English as an additional language, whether that be that they had no English when they came to my school or English not being their first language. About how I would use some different techniques to adapt my style to teaching English in Japan, but how i would keep lots of elements the same. Also wrote about being able to be the assistant on JET and working to support the main teacher and letting them have domain in their own classroom.
I specifically followed the prompt questions paragraph by paragraph, so I didn’t talk just about teaching but about the other points they wanted applicants to cover.
