Hi, I live in yokohama, japan with my wife. And my yearly salary is around 6.4million yen. And my wife is a homemaker and doesn’t do any job. We are planning to have a car but wondering will it be worth it to have a car or to ride rental cars ? Thank you.

it’s not necessary but good to have
however you might want to look at how much car/parking is going to eat into your budget
Where in Yokohama? If it’s in the Yokohama burbs then yeah a car is useful. Car share services are nice if you only use the car a couple of times a month but if you plan on using it more often than that it is useful to buy.
If I go for a hybrid car on average what will be the monthly cost with everything included?
I’ve lived in Yokohama for 2.5 years and we don’t have a car. Train bus or walk everywhere. If we need need a car, we’ll take a cab. Having a car here seems so useless
Having your own car means you can go anywhere you want, anytime you want. It’s hard to make a Costco run without a car. Of course, you have to pay for fuel, highway tolls, insurance, car taxes, and maintenance but I love having a car. We often go on weekend and holiday road trips in my car, which makes life even more fun.
It really depends on where in Yokohama. I know you don’t live out in Sakae-ku or Totsuka-ku because this wouldn’t even be a question: it’s rural enough that you’d be hard-pressed to live there without a car, unless you just happened to have a home/apartment near the train station. Likewise you don’t live in Nishi-ku or Kanagawa-ku, because there’s no way you’re according a place that even has a possibility of a car in those places with that salary.
Have you tried the car share services? My wife and I used those for a few years and it served us well, but this was in Tokyo and nearby options were numerous.
I have one but only use it for large shopping
