Hi, I lived in Tokyo for 11 years, started on a working holiday visa, ended up marrying a Japanese national and divorcing but got a job through an international primary school. I know I love Japan, because I lived there for many years. So, there is no debate there!
Now, I am 45, a British woman living in the USA and want so badly to return to Japan. My problem is, all the jobs say they require a BA which I don’t have, I do have 11 years of experience working in Early Childhood education there, can anyone offer any advice on how to take steps to move back? I have tried Gaijinpot, Linked in etc and no joy there. Any other recommendations?
For clarity.. no visa anymore, visa needed!

Is the rule 10 years experience or degree
You were able to work at a Japanese school without a BA?

Generally speaking, an instructor visa requires a bachelor’s degree or better. That’s an immigration requirement.
The specialist in humanities has the experience in lieu of education option though. So look for eikaiwa positions rather than ALT positions. Don’t expect much in the way of salary though, the whole industry is in a race to the bottom.
Good luck!
