TEFL Question!!

Hey everyone!! I’m planning on applying to JET this fall. I saw on the written application form that there are “yes” and “no” checkboxes asking if you have a TEFL certification. I currently don’t have one, but am planning on completing it in the fall alongside my fall semester courses at university (I’m graduating in the spring!). Would I check “yes” since I will have my certification by the time of my job offer if I were to be selected? Or should I write somewhere on the application that my TEFL is in progress but that it would be completed by the departure date?

Thank you!! <3

  1. There should be a contact email for the embassy on your country’s JET page. They can answer this more appropriately than we can.

  2. There should be a portion to check that you are currently working on one. If you say yes they’ll ask that you provide your certification so only choose that if you’ve actually finished it. If you make it past the application cycle you may be able to upload your certification on the JET application page before your interview though I can’t remember exactly on that. Hope this helps!

  3. I said it was in progress. As others have said, if you tick yes then you are expected to attach the certificate to your application. What is nice is that just after my interview, my consulate checked in with me about if I had finished my cert yet and I was able to email it in. So in hindsight of that, once you do complete it, whenever that is, you could just email them and politely say that you’ve attached your completed certificate, just in case that is of use/interest to them.

Editing to add that I went through an Australian consulate so we don’t have an online application system on which to upload – the main application was by post and the rest was emailing forms. So I don’t know the intricacies of that system if you’re in it. Either way, they are always happy to add more “points” to your application – they’re rooting for you too 🙂
