I find that I’ve gone on dates with a lot of people that are mutual foreigners, not necessarily other Westerners, just different cultures. It’s been an interesting experience, so I want to know what others have experienced .
A lot of things here are WTF, but this is Friday night WTF and it’s only Tuesday. WTF, dude?
Pretty much non-existent.
Beyond the confines of the internet, or visiting family. I haven’t had reason or occasion in many years to interact with fellow immigrants.
That’s not through any kind of odd misanthropy on my part.
It’s just a matter of how the stars have aligned. That is to say circumstances…
I married mine.
im the only foreigner here where i am, everyone stay away. all the girls here are mine. im speschul.
I’ve dated a few Chinese girls, overall fine, the only real bad date I had was with a girl whose English and Japanese were both terrible. My Japanese isn’t perfect, but I’ve carried on conversations in Japanese with both natives and non-natives with little difficulty but not this girl. One date was enough, I have no idea how people here who don’t speak Japanese end up with partners who don’t speak very good English, I mean that girl was cute, but that only goes so far…
Not sure if you are male or female but as a guy I found it inconvenient to befriend foreign ladies as there are so few candidates unless you meet one with special interests that match. I married a Japanese lady and it has worked out well, probably helped that I have tried to be as accommodating as hell regarding adapting to cultural norms that run counter to what I grew up with. That has served me well both at work and at home. Foreigners here all have our own set of potential issues and baggage, much more than people in their home country.
Honesty, so far it has been pretty good. I tend to prefer foreign people to Japanese people, simply because of the fact that they are in a new place/speak another language/usually come to make their lives better. So, you tend to meet better people on average, at least in my experience.
I find many westerners tiring as they can be way too obsessed with drinking. But I do have some non-boozing American or British friends. I’m bias due to the staggering amount of alcoholics in the Eikaiwa industry (which I was in 10 years ago).
I’ve met many Chinese or other non-western foreigners. Sometimes we’ve spoken in English and sometimes Japanese (depends on their level). I find they are very easy to talk to and we have often had more in common than Japanese.
I married my husband who is a Japanese born and raised Brazilian! So all my in-laws and most of the people who I interact with are Brazilian, many of them don’t speak Japanese. Go figure, I come to Japan to learn Japanese and now I live here and have to learn Portuguese haha.
