Is it possible for ALTs, eikaiwa teachers, etc. to become naturalized Japanese citizens? Or would the Japanese government require a higher paying and/or more stable job to start the process?
Any recommendations for ear plugs that can be used for sleeping?
I used to use those 3M ridged plugs, 10yrs ago, but now I see there’s some new stuff on Amazon called “loop”. Wondering if any feedback, seems easier to sleep on the side with.
Wife wants to keep windows open at night this month, which I’m cool with but the light traffic and semis will make me lose my sanity.
What would it take to become some type of coach PE teacher or something for young kids?
.
Changing my job for the first time in a while with two months of unemployment between jobs. A couple questions –
1. For pension during a period of unemployment, I need to register for this at the ward office, correct? Will I need any documentation other than my number card, zairyu card and/or pension book?
2. I have PR. Do I still need to notify immigration of my job change?
3. Do all companies offer the option to continue their private health insurance for a short number of months? Or is it possible I will need to register with NHI?
Any good suggestions for a place for a quiet hike/nature walk in or around Tokyo during Obon?
Is there a lifespan for Airism shirts? Like after so many washes or such a period, they no longer wick the sweat away? I toss my cotton undershirts when the pit stains become too noticeable and are ingrained in the fibers but not really comparable on the Airisms.
how do you dispose of (or donate??) those large rocks that you typically see in Japanese gardens? elderly Japanese relative has a few around an old house they want to eventually tear down, and the rocks need to go as well. they are decades old and quite large/heavy.
the suggestions I’ve gotten so far are to contact local 石材 or see if the guys who do gravel would want it (to turn it *into* gravel, I’m guessing, but a part of me feels like this is really mottainai). is there anywhere else I should look into?
Should I be concerned when buying CBD products now?
I wasn’t before because the shop I used was very clear that there was no THC content, but now I’ve learned that they were also selling THCH and other derivatives up until the recent decision. And now the news of raiding vape shops that were selling THC under another label has me concerned that it doesn’t matter if what I buy purports to contain no THC.
I just want some CBD for period cramps. I don’t want to wind up on a list. I think I’m gonna abandon this shop and just buy whatever they have at the organic food store, but should I not even do that?
Thinking about changing banks.
Is the zairyuu card update after renewal now required at all banks or are there still some banks out there where you only have to show it once when opening the bank?
Do you overthink at work?
I need advice on whether I should apply for pension exemption or not.
I began working this year after graduating from a university here. Currently don’t have any plan to go back home, but the possibility is still very much there.
I’m aware that it’s good for when you apply for permanent residency, and that there’s a refund system when you move out, but is it really worth it if I end up leaving the country, say 7 years later, when I lose years worth of refundable pension payments?
As for applying for pension exemption, there’s pretty much no disapproval from both my employer and the nenkin officers, as they were the one offering me the option in the first place. I figured I could save some money now and schematically only pay them when I’ve decided that I want to be here forever.
法務局 keeps telling me i need more than a 1 yr visa (3 or 5), as if i have any control over or inside knowledge of immigration’s decision process. am i missing something or are they asking me to do the impossible???
Recently, I feel like half the products and services I see with English names start with “The.” The Premium Malts. The Potato Chips. The Burger. The Hotel. When did this trend really take off and what on EARTH do Japanese marketers and designers think “the” means??
Is it a Japanese thing for business to take random, unscheduled closures or breaks during what should be normal business hours, or is expecting businesses to be consistent an American thing that I haven’t grown out of?
Does smart watch Suica/IC work if you don’t have a compatible phone?
I have an overseas Samsung so no Felica, but if I got a Fitbit or Garmin that does support IC, will I be able to use it?
I’m going to assume no, but wanted to check.
edit:
I should have googled this, it seems that Fitbit in particular introduced a new payment system earlier this year so you can add a Suica via their app, separate to your phone.
Not stupid question but I just got to the hospital and chilling in bed and oh boy does the mini fan from daiso make a difference!
Best clothes steamer?
I saw some cheap steamer on Amazon which had a perfect score and tons of ratings, but it seems like it only has two Japanese reviews and the foreign reviews are fake.
I have Friday to Tuesday off and I haven’t made any plans. Does anyone have recommendations for good bon odori festivals or maybe good onsen/sento to visit in the Tokyo area? (Or really any interesting events that are easy to go to from Tokyo with no advance planning)
So employer is forcing a covid positive person to use up their holidays to stay home for quarantine. Specifically not allowed to go to work. This can’t be legal right?
Cloud engineers:
Which do you think is much more lucrative in Japan: Azure or AWS (or even GCP)? I know certs aren’t enough for a job, but it’s been so tough finding jobs even after passing Az-104. Already in IT (entry level though). Everyone wants experience, which I don’t have a lot of yet.
If nobody replies then I’ll ask again tomorrow for visibility
Help! There’s this bug flying around inside my room out of nowhere. Definitely not a cicada but I don’t know if it’s any dangerous. I don’t exactly have a clear image as it’s now hiding inside the AC, but what should I do?
