Direct Hire Search

Hello. Just wondering is there some kind of hub where you can look for direct hire positions? Or would I have to search each district’s respective site? Also when does the hiring season generally start? Thanks for the help!

  1. First to note is that there is 99.97% chance you would NOT be hired by a school (elementary, junior, senior) if you do not already live in Japan and have at least 2 years experience working in Japanese schools.

If you want Eikaiwa work, they always hire direct. See Gaijinpot, Jobs in Japan, Google “teach in Japan” and probably any other Eikaiwa chain hiring will pop up.

If you reside in Japan and have at least 2+ years experience teaching in Japanese schools, then try Ohayo Sensei and JALT Jobs.

  2. With most Direct Hire positions becoming Kaikeinendo positions you’ll find that the majority of applications go in around December, interviews in January, decisions in Februrary, and starting April 1st on the fiscal year.

If you are looking for Direct Hire positions, make sure you have:
    1) A work visa and currently living in Japan.
    2) Minimum 3yrs work experience in Japan.
    3) (Depending on Location) Between N1 and N3 JLPT equivalent Japanese.

You can sometimes find direct hire jobs as I did with “Hello Work”. I found a part-time English assistant job but then found out after interviewing that the ALT was leaving the position and they gave us that Full-time position instead. A lot of times the BOEs out in the boondocks don’t necessarily have the best online advertisement. A lot of the places that do hire, do so through word of mouth. My best advice would be to look for very small townships. Most large cities already have a pecking order or next-in-line. But the skies the limit if you are willing to go out into the countryside.

  3. December or January via the board of education websites. Some of them won’t even post on websites, they’ll literally have it circulated on bulletin boards in the ward office.

Also they’ll want you to submit a handwritten application. In many cases this will be in Japanese. Welcome to the ~~layer cake~~ public sector son.

Some of the smaller BOEs won’t consider you without PR or a spouse-visa as they will not go to the effort to sponsor your visa.

  4. Not much direct hire anymore unfortunately. I’ve read there’s still a few in the countryside but that’s about it.
