Looking for advice on what I should do moving forward.

I have just entered my 4th year on JET and I have decided that after I complete JET, I want to continue working in Japan as life here is quite nice, I would rather move away from teaching English as I would like to start a job where there is growth (money and skills).

I haven’t taken JLPT at all and my current goal is to work towards N2 and ideally N1. My biggest weakness is kanji so I am hard at work on that.

However, I really have no idea what things I can do outside of studying Japanese to improve my chances at starting a career in Japan.

Unfortunately I don’t think my degree will be very useful in getting a job here, though maybe I’m wrong (double major, screen and media + communication specializing in Japanese).

So while I do the remaining 2 years on JET, what would be some things you guys think I should do to give me the greatest chance at starting a career here? I don’t mind doing any online courses.

Not sure if it matters but I’m currently living in Kansai and would preferably like to stay in Kansai if I can.

  1. The best things you can do are improve your Japanese (which you say you are working on) and finding a marketable skill. It’s very hard to make the transition from ALTing without upgrading your skillset. You need to figure out what you actually want to do. “Not teaching English” is a start but you need to narrow that down a bit and start working on building a marketable skillset for that industry.
