Undergraduate Software Engineer

Hey everyone,

I am a 29 years old from Portugal and I am planning to move to Japan in the future and I am in the process of applying to several jobs who support relocation to Japan.

Things in Portugal are very tough for younger people and was always my wish to one day live in Japan (even visited the country this Spring).

I mainly been searching on LinkedIn, Relocate.me and Dev Tokyo for jobs in the Software area for a Junior level.

However I fear my particular professional and educational situation can be a problem:

I have an unfinished Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering here in Portugal but early this year I finished a Web Development Course with Le Wagon (school that also exists in Japan).

In terms of my career I have 7 years of experience in the Engineering world (Design Engineer and Project Coordinator) at Yazaki (a Japanese company) and most recently I have been working as a Software Engineer in a startup IT company.

Do you think the unfinished Bachelors can be a problem to my wish to relocate to Japan, considering my verified course in the software area alongside my professional experience?

Also if you have any tips to apply to Software jobs in Japan or if you have any connections in that area don’t hesitate to reply to me.

If you want you can see my LinkedIn profile with more detailed information regarding the topics above:

Thank you in advance. 🙏🏻

How close to finishing did you get? Immigration has been known to count years of study as related experience when trying to get up to the 10 year experience mark for folks without a completed education.

    >I finished a Web Development Course with Le Wagon

At best I would expect this to get you another year of experience that you can use. I don’t believe immigration would consider them equivalent to a vocational school.

    >Do you think the unfinished Bachelors can be a problem to my wish to relocate to Japan

It certainly complicates things. But I wouldn’t say that its a deal breaker. You would of course need to get your resume past HR recruiters though, and not having that degree on your resume would likely make it more difficult to get past the algorithms.

Have a poke around on [https://www.tokyodev.com/](https://www.tokyodev.com/), and start applying. It certainly won’t hurt.

    Good luck!
