Can I wear a gray suit to a job interview?

I have a job interview in a few days for the position of mechanical engineer and I’m running into some contradicting information about this. I’m a senior in my field and apparently that might affect what I can wear. The suit isn’t very dark and not very bright either. If I owned a black suit I would just play it safe but I don’t know if I can find a good one for a decent price in time.

  1. I imagine they would be hiring on more than just appearances, but I suppose it depends how stoic the company is. A good looking suit worn with confidence shouldn’t be an issue.

  2. If the suit fits you well and you look presentable, it shouldn’t be an issue. Black and navy are more common, but grey is fine. White shirt, conservative tie, black shoes and belt.

The only issue I would forsee is that it you have multiple interviews and wear the grey suit to all of them, it would be much more noticeable that you’re wearing the same suit than if you were wearing black or navy.

  3. I don’t really see a problem at all. As long as it fits you well.

General advice for the first suit is Navy, it’s the most versatile.
