I’m a student still and have a resident card validity until November 11. I’ll be renewing my visa status since I’ll start working full time at a company from October 1st. I wanted to know if I need a passport with a longer expiry date to renew my visa. Please advise if you know anything about this. Thanks a lot in advance! Happy Weekend.

Yes, you need a valid passport from your country of citizenship. You can most likely renew through your country’s consulate.
No the validity of your passport doesn’t matter (as long as it’s not expired), but I’d get started on that passport renewal pretty soon if I were you.
When I last extended my residency permit, there was a section to fill out your passport information so I’d assume you’d need to have a valid not expired passport.
But it could be a case by case thing so maybe the best thing to do is call your nearest immigration office and explain your sitiation.
A quick Google comes up with this: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan [Frequently Asked Questions](https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/faq.html) so I would say “yes” to your question.
## Q7: Why was my visa application not accepted?
“`
A7: If any of the following cases apply to you, your application may not be accepted.
(1) Applications from persons holding Japanese nationality
(2) The application is made to the Japanese Embassy / Consulate General outside your country (region) of birth or country (region) of residence
(3) You currently hold a valid visa or re-entry permit
(4) Your previous visa application to visit Japan for a specific purpose was rejected and you reapply to visit Japan for the same purpose within six months from the rejection
(5) The visa application is already being processed at a different Japanese Embassy / Consulate General
(6) There are some errors or omissions in the submitted documents
“`
__(7) The period of validity or the visa attachment space of your passport is insufficient__
“`
(8) The application is made by a person who does not have the qualifications to make a proxy application
(9) An application for issuance of a Certificate of Eligibility is still pending
“`
Best to check with them.
Apply for a new passport, then when you apply for the next residence card, tell the immigration office that you have already applied for a new passport.
If you can show some king of receipt to that end, that would be great, but even if not, they will totally take your word for it.
