Updating change of job, made a mistake

Hey everyone,

I made a mistake and found out that I needed to notify immigration about my change of job. I thought my job took care of this, but I was wrong. For context, I have a humanities visa that has been valid from 2019-2024. I have always taught as an English instructor. I have a side job that I have filed taxes for as well, also an instructor gig.

It has been quite a while since I changed my job, but I’m going to go to the immigration office this week to correct the mistake. However, I am a little nervous of a few things:

1) How screwed am I? Is there any immediate worry that my visa might be revoked?

2) Do I also need to let them know about the side job? It is a contracted job from a Japanese company.

3) When I changed jobs, I used PTO to cover a few days that overlapped with my new jobs start day. I started working my new job September 1 of last year, but the final day of my old job was a few days past the first because I was using PTO. Is there anything I need to do because of this?

Thank you for the help. I know I messed up, but I’m trying to do everything I can to correct it ASAP.

  1. You can notify the immigration online 24/7, I did mine online and 2 months late, never had anyone ask me about it. Took about 3 hours to get the “notification accepted” mail.

  2. 1) If the new job is in the same SOR category, then probably not a big issue for not notifying immigration. Extremely unlikely to have your SOR revoked.

    2) On a humanities SOR I don’t think you need permission to engage in outside activities like you do on student or dependent SOR. So long as your side gig fits within the SOR type you have, and it doesn’t significantly exceed your main job in terms of hours put in and money received, it should be fine.

    3) This one could potentially cause a headache for your new employer if you are a regular employee and not a dispatch. If you were on PTO, then you were still on the previous company’s payroll. They would have to sort out the tax/social insurance issue somehow. Though I’d doubt immigration would care.

  3. I didn’t notify immigration when changing jobs a few times until I learned you need to do it. Just tell them you didn’t know, and then moving forward always let them know. My understanding about overlapping jobs is its not good for tax reasons but not illegal, and it would be better to ask your new employer what to do.
