Where to buy Western style bottle shampoo. and why are all bottles in japan dispenser type?

Hi. Today It was really hot and humid because of the typhoon. I wanted to go to my gym to get a bit of a mid-walk shower and wanted to get shampoo from matsukyo. I realized this before too, that all of the shampoo, conditioner bottles in japan are dispenser type and you can buy refills for cheaper but I wanted to buy something that I could carry in my bag when I go to the gym like Nivea Men 3in1 but I couldn’t find one. Do you know a place where can I find such products? And also why the hair/skincare products are always dispenser type? Is there a regulation for reducing plastic waste or it is just Japanese being frugal? If there is a regulation it is kind of hypocritical because there are tons of individually packaged goods in Japan a non-reusable bottle of shampoo wouldn’t hurt.

  1. Because they’re super convenient? I personally love that everything is the pump style. Less mess, don’t have to fiddle with trying to get it open while soaking wet. Even the west is starting to transition to pump nozzle containers for shampoo.

Why not do what everyone else does when they want to travel with their skincare routine & bath products? Just transfer the product into a container that works for you? You can buy an empty container of your desired size/style to put the product of your choosing in there. Or just find what you want online.

  2. You can buy travel size bottles of shampoo and conditioner.

You can also buy empty bottles of various sizes and fill them with what you use at home.

  3. Places like Fit Care Express (at least around tokyo area) and probably most drug stores will usually have some travel-use sets of shampoo/body soap, something like this: https://www.askul.co.jp/p/KX85726/

I use those when I go to onsen/sauna, and refill them from the refill tubes that I buy separately. Daiso has some nice transparent vinyl pouches (around B5 size) where you can put those small bottles together with whatever other stuff you need at shower/bath/onsen.

The same kinda places also sell empty plastic containers you can use to make your own set (tho I found them a bit annoying to refill, the merit/biore plastic is much nicer)

  4. Dude, go to Daiso. They have little squeeze bottles. Fill those up with your stuff.

Who buys travel size anymore? It was like 10 bucks to get a tiny squeeze of sunscreen in Montreal.

Nah get a ziplock and some little bottles.

  5. The mini travel shampoo sets are sometimes next to the full size products, but also sometimes in a separate “travel” section or on the shelves next to the till. You might have to hunt around but they’re there 🙂

Some western brands like Herbal Essences have non-pump lids though. Or you could just buy a refill bag with a resealable screw cap and use that at the gym. Otherwise I vote for buying your own containers 🙂

  6. Get big bottle, put what you need in little squeeze bottle. Very simple.

Not sure why you are making this question into a referendum on Japan
