Mossy forest retreat accessible from Tokyo?

I’m visiting Tokyo solo in early September and I’m looking to do a day trip from Tokyo to spend some time in the kind of mossy, temperate, old growth Japanese rainforest that places like Nagano and Yakushima are famous for….but accessible from Tokyo via bus or train, or even a tour that leaves from Tokyo.

The chance to go to an onsen or stay at an onsen/ryokan nearby would be a plus!

One of the only forests that has consistently come up in my search is….Aokigahara. I have looked into some inexpensive all inclusive day tours of Aokigahara Forest, which definitely has the flora that Im looking for, I love that it’s at the base of Mt. Fuji, and I would love to see those volcanic caves….but I’m obviously very very wary of the forest’s reputation. The fact that it also doesn’t seem like a common day trip to make from Tokyo also gives me pause and makes me want to look for an alternative.

Are there Onsen Ryokan near any of the lakes north of Mt. Fuji that people would reccomend?

  2. Don’t let the online reputation of Aokigahara scare you. It’s a beautiful forest with well maintained trails. You’re much more likely to encounter a tragic death on the JR Chuo Line or Odakyu Line.
