Question

Don’t know if its the appropriate place to post this, but I was hoping to get some information on a subject.
I’ve seen a video saying that there’s a “japanese legend” that says ” if you have nothing in this world but have a loving brother you are already rich”.
I can’t find any info on this and would like to know more/if it’s true. If someone could translate it for me I would be very much appreciated 😊. Thanks

  1. It’s very unlikely to be real, it’s certainly not well known. It was probably invented for tiktok. It sounds like a very modern, western sentiment and not at all the sort of thing that would come out of feudal Japan.

It *does* sound like the sort of thing you might hear in anime, but anime expresses an enormous array of sentiments, many of which are disconnected from traditional Japan. Although… even then… it feels like not quite. It feels like this ‘rich’ means ‘fulfilled’ and this brother means any human being (brotherhood of mankind). I can’t recall seeing the words for ‘brother’ and ‘wealthy’ being used this way in Japanese.
