Made some sushi for the first time for my 28th birthday

My family surprised me with sushi for my birthday! We made California rolls (Philly rolls?) with imitation crab, carrots, avocado and cream cheese etc. Sushi rice was a bit wet/mushy, but still tasted great. Any tips for the next attempt? I heard these styles with the seaweed on the outside is more Pacific island style whereas just rice or seaweed on the inside is more Japanese. Any tips, recommendations for your favorite recipes or sources for information on sushi making are appreciated!

  2. Happy birthday 🙂 These are gorgeous! Having rice on the outside and nori on the inside is actually an American invention to solve the issue of Americans not being particulary open to seaweed in their diet, it’s called uramaki or inside out roll, but Japanese love it too. For future attempts just follow your heart, don’t be afraid to try out new or nontraditional ingredients (it’s your sushi after all!) and that sometimes a simple roll with just one or two ingredients hits a spot something complicated never could. You seem to have a good technique already! Also try hand rolls, they’re so fun to make! 🙂

  3. Happy Birthday, and your sushi looks absolutely delicious. If the rice was mushy/wet, then you either added too much water or cooked it for too long, but if it tasted fine then its no biggie.

Remember, you can always add more water, and you can always cook it longer, but you cant do the opposite for either one. A rule of thumb is 1 to 1.5, that is 1 cup of dry rice to 1 and a half cups of water.

  4. That’s something I wanna learn to do one of these days!! I’d probably make it alllllll the time at home if I knew how…
