I’m looking for a new camera lens and keep encountering sellers listing very cheap products as junk / not working due to non-inspection by the vendor. I really want to bid on some stuff but the whole thing feels very scammy. Has anyone had experience with this type of seller?
Here’s an example: https://auctions.yahoo.co.jp/seller/bnvha38398

Most likely: seller doesn’t want returns when things don’t work.
Less likely, it’s all stoked and the seller has no clue what they’re selling.
Usually if you read it, it’s because they didnt test it, and dont want ultra picky nit pickers buying it who will find a fault under a microscope and try return it
I’ve bought a few ‘junk’ computers that were either repairable in 10 minutes or simply a little old. I have yet to get complete junk.
Junk just usually means untested, not necessarily that it doesn’t work. Just go by the pictures and use your best judgement.
I’ve bought a lot of junk camera stuff on Yahoo over the years, 95% has been just fine
“Junk” means untested or not-in working condition; sold as it, no returns.
He says in the description **使用/動作未確認**の為、**ジャンク**扱いとさせて頂きます. “Haven’t tested whether it works or can be used, so selling as ‘junk'”. A bit like buying something from the junk area at Hard-Off, there’s no guarantee the item even works. Could be a bargain if you have repair skills or are just willing to take the risk. *Caveat emptor*! (Edit: fixed my quotation marks)
I buy electronics test equipment and repair it.
The word ‘junk’ just means that the seller can not test it and guarantee 100% that it operates to all manufacturer specifications, so to prevent picky buyers from complaining for a refund and getting bad reviews, it’s sold as ‘Junk’ with no warranty or return offered.
Lots of correct replies here – junk basically means it is untested and might not work (unless it is clearly stated in the description that it is broken). It could of course be 100% fine but that’s the chance you take.
I got a nice working Nikon lens, labeled as junk, for just 3000¥. It works fine and is now my preferred lens.
Camera equipment is generally expensive. Unless it’s a physical store where you can walk in and inspect/try out the lens I would not take the risk of getting into some transaction headache of any online second hand store. That goes for other electronics also. It’s just not worth the hassle but a 500 yen book with a creased cover? Yeah I won’t stress out much.
I list things as junk when I don’t know anything about the item to know for sure it works properly or not. I have no idea about camera equipment for example so I would take several photos at different angles and I would list as junk and would say that I don’t know anything about camera equipment to know if it is in proper condition. That way the buyer can view the item and decide for themselves.
