Hi! I’m headed to Japan this September for 12 nights; I’ve taken a lot of tips from this community to plan my trips. Thank you.
We’ll be staying in two old ryokan: one in Izu and one in Kyoto. Each includes kaiseki.
I vaguely remember reading that it’s customary to tip one’s makanai after a stay at a traditional ryokan. I also remember reading that the tip is customarily presented in a special envelope.

Would anyone who knows please tell me if this is true, and if so, how much to tip? I’m sure we can buy the envelopes in Tokyo somewhere, which is where we’ll begin our trip—if someone knows what those envelopes are called, please tell me, so I can find them.
I also welcome any other ryokan advice; I know the etiquette, in general, but any lesser-known tips that might enhance our stay would be lovely.
Thank you!
