Since it’s a known thing that corporate culture in Japan is not ideal, how hard/easy is it to make it as an entrepreneur or self-employed person in Japan?

In my mind I think opening a food stand would be really cool or using my current skills and background to become a freelance/consultant for digital media. Any other self-employed people or entrepreneurs have any experience w/ this?

  2. Corporate culture is not ideal but being an entrepreneur or self-employee is that much harder in Japan.

Japanese consumers are notoriously fickle, especially in Tokyo. Once the hype or trend dies down, a lot of them go out of business.

You’re going to need lots of capital, need to do a lot of market research and an understanding of promoting and surviving a business in the Japanese market.

Freelance is definitely more possible but you’ll need to make connections, have a robust portfolio and some Japanese language skills if you want domestic clients.

Either way, neither of these choices are an easy step into the country. Money issues aside, there are visa issues to consider too.
