Green Car ticket got cancelled and been seated in unreserved seats. What do?

Like the title said I’ve been part of that Shinkansen chaos at Tokyo station today. Only green car tickets were left so we took them and waited all day for our train to arrive. Now turns out they cancelled our train entirely but we still needed to go to our destination so we opted for the unreserved seats in the same train type. That’s at least what train station staff redirected us to do.

Now I still paid for the green car for a cancelled train only to go by unreserved seat. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad I’m going at all and I’m not struggling but that’s still a 6000yen difference in what the tickets are worth. Can I get that refunded or what should I do now does anyone know?

  1. I dunno if this applies to the current chaos, but in general if you’re having shinkansen problems the best way to resolve them is to get on a train and then talk to the car chief, their office is around car 7 I believe. They’ll be a lot more helpful than any desk staff.

  2. You’ve already got your answer, but I got put in a similar situation in early June when the heavy rain stopped the Shinkansen. I was able to get a refund for the unused portion of my ticket (and no need to rush, I did it literally 3 days ago, 10 weeks after the fact.)

  3. Are people seriously victim blaming for a typhoon? I had to come out early to Osaka on the 14th for work on the 15th (yes when everything was supposed to be closed).
Fully expected to be able to travel on the morning of the 16th, since it looked like the typhoon would have moved away by then.

Finally made it on to a train leaving Osaka not to long ago. An interesting time to say the least.
