Hello,
I already reached out to the immigration office to inquire whether I need to notify them about a change of academic institution and they informed me that in the case of resident status as “Cultural Activities,” such notification is not necessary but being an anxious person I’m seeking confirmation from anyone who might have been in a similar situation.
Some context: I am currently a doctoral student (from a foreign academic Institution) and a temporary visiting researcher in Japan. My residency status is categorized as “cultural activities,” and it will expire in March 2024.
By the end of September, my position at my current JP university will come to an end. However, starting from October 1st, I will continue my research activities in another JP academic institution for approximately three months. My financial support still comes from my home university, and my research activities remain unchanged. The only difference is the institution hosting me.
From what the immigration office explained to me, as a resident with a “Cultural Activities” status and a non-working position, I can stay in Japan until the expiration of my residency card without needing to notify any changes.
I apologize if the post doesn’t follow the reddit/sub-reddit rules but I haven’t used it in a while.
Thanks!
