Proper way to dispose of a (tiny) swollen lithium battery

So I have one of those wireless earbuds in a rechargeable case, and the case suddenly came apart and I can see the lithium pack inside is swollen. Does anybody have experience with getting rid of something like that? I know what to do with used electronics and I know what to do with gomi and sodai gomi and all that… but what to do here? Thanks for any pointers!

  1. Take them to your local municipal recycling center. There is a place there to dispose of batteries.

  2. Not sure about disposal, but take care in the meantime. Swollen lithium batteries can be a potential fire risk. These might be small enough that they won’t ignite if they rupture, but to play it safe don’t try to recharge them and store them somewhere safe where they are unlikely to ignite something else if they do rupture.

  3. I had a portable battery that was swollen after a particularly bad fall out of a moving car, asked the local fire station if they take those and they directed me to Bic Camera which took it without question.
