Itinerary Check (9 days – Fukuoka, Kumamoto, Beppu)

Hello everyone! I’m planning on visiting South Korea for the first time in October (excited!), and so of course I just had to use the opportunity to also visit some of the areas of Kyushu that I wasn’t able to see on my first trip there. Any help on the below would be much appreciated! I think the main thing I’m worried about is having too much or too little time in a place, or missing something cool by putting something on the list that isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Day 1: Arrive on the ferry from Busan to Fukuoka around 8:30ish. Hotel then bed.

Day 2: Visit Teamlab Forest and Ohori Park. Maybe the Tenjin area/ Canal City/ Nakasu in the afternoon/evening (if not I’ll do that on Day 3). Visit the Pokémon Centre.

Day 3: Haven’t decided but maybe one of the islands (Nokonoshima, Ainoshima) or maybe go to Dazaifu (depending on how much of Tenjin/Nakasu I was able to see). Any recommendations welcome!

Day 4: Train from Fukuoka to Kumamoto. Explore Kumamoto (castle, general potter round. Recommendations welcome!)

Day 5: Daytrip to Shimabara Peninsula to visit Unzen Onsen and the Disaster Museum.

Day 6: Daytrip to Takachicho gorge (I know it’s going to be a long day but I’ve found buses there and back from Kumamoto that give me a decent amount of time there).

Day 7: Train from Kumamoto to Beppu. See the Hells in the afternoon.

Day 8: Visit Yufuin – depending on how long that takes, maybe explore a bit more of Beppu.

Day 9: Beppu in the morning before getting the train to Fukuoka airport to fly back to Seoul.

Thanks so much!

  1. Have you been to Nagasaki? It’s by far the most interesting city in Kyushu in my opinion – it’d be a shame to skip it out if you haven’t been there already!

  2. If I’d had more than one day in Kumamoto, I would have done a lot more strolling around the shopping arcades and cute side neighborhoods. Not having a must-do schedule but just enjoying the vibe, it’s a nice little city. And gone to more One Piece statues but that’s a me thing. The castle and the tourist-shop-laden “castle town” beside it are worth the visit, at least.

While youre in the area of the castle look up Cafe Arrow. It’s a teeny tiny four-seat coffee place run by a wizened little man who only makes one kind of pour-over coffee and he’s a delight. We found it by accident because we were too early to check in to our hotel, and had no idea it’s a favorite location for online “hidden gem” sorts of places.
