Is there a cultural explanation for why cross dressing is so accepted in a conservative society like Japan?

I’ve been living here a little while now and I see cross dressers out and about or on TV wayyy more than in my home country – the latter I would never see at home unless I looked for a particular show or movie.

Here there are cross dressers on panel shows or on daytime TV. I think this a really great. But in my home country which is more liberal and has more LGBTQ friendly laws – if a main channel featured a cross dresser on morning television as a presenter, some idiots somewhere would probably complain about it.

Japan seems really conservative in many ways so I’m kinda surprised by it. Can someone enlighten me?
