Would non-degree in-person IT/Programming bootcamps/training/certification in Japan open opportunity for a working and living in there?

I don’t have a degree (2 year diploma in IT instead) but have over 7 years of IT experience. I was thinking of taking a training course if it would ultimately let me work there or at least provide a job placement temporarily (practicum).

Is this a realistic avenue to pursue?

  2. You need a degree. Maybe you could come to Japan with 10 years experience, but why hire you over someone with experience and a degree?

  3. Generally speaking things you may earn outside of a formal education setting (certificates, ‘bootcamps’, etc) can at best be considered as ‘experience’ and add to the experience you’ve already got towards the 10 years of experience you’d need in lieue of a formal education.

Folks like to say that a bachelors degree is required, and indeed it is if your job is going to be teaching a foreign language (like English). But for IT type work you can get by with the equivalent to a Japanese vocational school (your two year diploma may count towards that, although when I got my engineer status many years ago I was told that the program needed to be 3 years (I graduated with a ‘Computer Science Technology’ diploma in Canada, a two year program with an additional year of co-op).

There are non-degree certifications one can get that will qualify them for visa sponsorship. The complete list is here: https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/laws/nyukan_hourei_h09.html
