Thrifted English books in Japan?

Hi, it’s really hard to find variety of English books in Japan.

Personally, I prefer to buy thrifted books for $ & environmental reasons. Anyone here knows if there are any stores (online stores would be best!) in Japan that have a larger catalogue of English thrifted books for sale..?

  1. What city are you in? When I lived In Kyoto, the YWCA had a used book exchange. Now I’m in Tokyo and many of the used book stores I frequent have at least a small English language section as do the public libraries.

  2. I seconded Infinity Books! You can also order from their website.

Also Amazon Japan has a large amount of used books as well! Usually decent prices too, only negative is they can take a month sometimes to arrive.

  3. If you don’t need to actually own the books and know what you want, go to the local library. Most of them are in systems that will allow you to borrow from other libraries.

  4. Get a kindle and use the library card of a friend in your home country. Many local library systems have ebooks, and it costs zero dollars. Your city/ward may have English ebooks too, but your home country is probably a better bet.

  5. mercari, yahoo auctions?

I have a bunch I’m planning to read and sell so if I move back I don’t need to take them with me and I would use/used those platforms for it

  6. Not to be a downer, but there used to be quite a *lot* of used English bookstores in Tokyo. Half a dozen at least, some of them quite big.

And since the 2010s, they’ve all closed down. Not all, Infinity Books is I think the only used English bookstore in all of Tokyo. It’s rather small and the few times I went they didn’t have the best selection of books.

Nowadays I use my Kindle. E-ink type only! You can be a good boy and buy ebooks off Amazon, or you can be a filthy pirate like myself and peruse certain sites for pretty much any book for nothing.
