Driving school and acquire license

New to Japan and didn’t speak the language yet. Has anyone have a recommendation if there is any English driving lessons and would help also to process Japanese license?

Many of you will say to learn the language first but for my case it might take time especially I am working on an English company and no pressure to learn nihongo

  1. Do you have a license in your home/previous country? If so, you may be able to transfer it to Japan relatively easily.

If you’re from a country that does not allow such transfers but know how to drive, you can go to a police license testing center and take the test(s). There are fees, but they’re not so high. The in-car driving tests, as far as I know, are only given in Japanese, though.

If you’ve never driven and need a license, either going to a driving school—some offer English lessons—or simply not driving are your options.

(I live in Tokyo and, though I got a driving license from scratch 11 years ago, have never driven here since getting the license, having got the license only to qualify for an international driving license that will allow me to drive when visiting people in other countries.)

  2. Koyama is generally considered the best option.

Something to be aware of, a lot of the schools offering English or other language assistance are not “certified” driving schools. While they are cheaper they do not offer the same services a certified school does. The biggest of those advantages is being able to take the practical test where you practiced in cars/instructors are you are familiar with.

Uncertified schools you will have to go through the license process at the driving center.

(Note you will still need to take the written tests and get your license issued at the DL center)

  3. I used Koyama already for Bike and Car licenses and it was good.

I passed both Licenses on my first trial.

Highly professional for Japan and it was even fun.
