Negotiating a role at a Japanese company – need some advice

I am negotiating a corporate role in Tokyo – what should I ask for?

I’ve been asked to return to my role at a large Japanese company and the role would be based in Tokyo (I’m currently based in the US) – what are some things I should ask for? E.g. I’m asking for relo costs from the US, tax advisory support, housing stipend. I know I won’t get everything I want but I don’t want to miss anything obvious.

Appreciate any advice!

  2. If you have kids ask for an education stipend to cover international school.

Old school ex-pat packages also included a two week trip home every year as a benefit (for you and whatever family you bring to Japan with you).

In addition to the housing stipend you’ll want your company to act as (or hire) a guarantor. Ideally you’d have your company paying your rent for you and having that deducted from your pre-tax compensation.

I don’t know how strong your Japanese is, but private Japanese lessons would be useful (assuming you need them).
