Staying in / around Nagasaki

Hey all, we will be visiting Japan and for the last few days of our trip have decided to head down near Nagasaki. We want to visit the bomb museum and gardens, and also have a day at Huis Ten Bosch (for the one piece ship). At the end of the 3 day trip, will be needing to get to Nagasaki Airport for a 9pm flight. My few questions:

How is Nagasaki in terms of English speaking?

Hotels seem fully booked a lot already, is October 6th to 8th a busy time / holiday?

Are taxis available in or around Ureshino (or Nagasaki prefecture in general) to get to the train station? Or is Ureshino too far away to be considered a good place to stay for visiting Nagasaki and Huis Ten Bosch park? Dont mind a bit of travel on public transport if its reasonable?

Anyone done a similiar journey or have any tips? Thanks!

  1. We loved our stay in Nagasaki. Tons to do and we took the train to Huis Ten Bosch which is easy as the stop is right outside the park gates. We stayed near Chinatown at the [Candeo](https://maps.app.goo.gl/RgmDkVix5R32xGm49?g_st=ic) and would recommend it. Highly recommend the night view on Mt. Inasa. There’s a city bus route that you can take to the base of the ropeway. Or taxi there.

  2. Nagasaki is fine with English speaking. I think it’s no better or worse than other tourist destinations. Depends on which restaurant you go to but many have english menus, etc.

October 7-9 is the kunchi festival, Nagasaki’s biggest festival and this is the first time it’s happening in 4 years so yes, it will be quite busy/booked out. It would be amazing to be here for it but as you can see it might be difficult to find accomodation.

Taxis are definitely available in ureshino and any other town with a train station. If there’s nothing available in Nagasaki city itself, I think it wouldn’t be too difficult to “commute” from ureshino every day. It’s like 20 or 30 minutes on the bullet train so not a big deal. However, It certainly would be too far to take a taxi from Nagasaki to ureshino.

I believe the train to huis ten bosch splits off from the Nagasaki main line at takeo onsen, so you could look at accomodation there as well. But it’s trival going between ureshino and takeo onsen so either one is fine.

I think to reasonably get to Nagasaki city, anywhere near a shinkansen station (isahaya, omura, ureshino, takeo) is fine as you’ll be able to get to Nagasaki station very quickly. Isayaha and omura have some charm but they are very standard small japanese cities and I would say a Ryokan at ureshino or takeo would be much more fun/interesting. Just be aware that in those towns the shinkansen station is a bit far from the town center but less than Â¥1000 taxi ride or your hotel may have a shuttle.

  3. Fiancé and I just got back from Japan. We speak only English. Went to multiple restaurants with no English menu and no staff that spoke English.

Google translate app is BROKEN. Picture mode makes all menus readable instantly, and conversation speech mode sped everything up SO much. Just learn the basic thank you and sorry and you’re set
