[Neputa Matsuri](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1kAs7Uazd0) of Hirosaki is often an overlooked festival as it is in the shadow of the famous [Nebuta Matsuri](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8MzUnFAGVM8) of Aomori but it’s worth visiting to see the artwork of the floats with use the nishiki-e style from ukiyoe (wood block prints). The frontside of the floats usually depict warriors and fighting scenes while the backside is a “farewell” scene with a beautiful woman but not always. In this case, the beauty is actually Kiyohime from an old story called Dojo-ji where she turned into a monstrous serpent to pursue the object of her affection.
