I lost my residence card and I’m leaving (for good) in a week. Should I be worried?

Basically I lost it and I am leaving in a week back to my country.
Bank account and city ward stuff has already been done. Basically just needed to hand it in at the airport.
Do I need to do anything before leaving or is it fine?

  1. At the very least you should head down to your local koban to report it lost. They’ll give you a certificate of loss report or something that you can show when asked.

Arguably you should be getting it reissued ASAP, even if it’s only so that you can get it hole punched on your way out at the airport. You know how Japanese customer service gets when folks wander off script.

  2. You need to report it as lost on the police station and keep a copy of the report . As long as you have the passport with non expired visa、you are good to go. It will be only an issue if you want a re-entry permission but I guess is not your case

  3. Times like these is why I have a copy of all my important documents scanned and saved on a cloud. Indeed you’ll have to report it but let’s hope you won’t need the information from it in coming days

  4. You must report it lost and get the certificate. A lot easier if you have a scanned copy.
If you don’t report it, this could come back to haunt you should you ever return to Japan even as a tourist – should your lost card fall into the wrong hands.
Hopefully it’s been either been handed in to the Police somewhere or dissappeared down a drain somewhere.
But yes, I agree with other replies, you should probably get it reissued, if only for it to be handed in a few days later and punched holes in.

  5. Yes, you should be worried. You need it when you go through exit immigration at departure. Go to the police station and file a lost card report. Then go to immigration and get a new card issued.
